The biggest issue to be seen here currently is that this game is lacking variety in content (although to its defense, this is a surprisingly small download compared to most games you would get on this platform). Power-ups, like a throw able bomb or a toxic-riff on the Star power-up in Mario Kart are scattered everywhere in little crash bandicoot crates, but many more things in these gorgeous environments and smooth animations replicate the Saturday morning feel. When your gauge fills up from fighting, you can temporarily call in a tank, which is more balanced than it may seem. Additionally, you can change classes on the fly from picking up the guns from fallen foes. Like Battleborn or Overwatch, each of the four classes have their passive abilities and light-hearted personalities from their one signature weapon. This was obviously built with VR in mind, but I was able to look past this issue, not sure how many others will. The natural movement of the game does take a little getting used to with your options being a slow or fast directional turning through clicking the left stick. The good news is, you can experience this entire Free-To-Play crazy fest without it. This whole game was built-in mind to be a Saturday morning war cartoon…in VR. Luckily, this actually doesn’t play out like your standard multiplayer shooter, but a throwback to the late 90s-early 2000s of this genre, with a Goldeneye health system, vibrant gunplay, no iron sights (or ammunition for that matter) and mystical power-ups galore.
I am one who enjoys the shooter genre very much, but for a style like this, I don’t think going the standard route would be an excellent fit. My biggest fear is that this setting would be nothing more than a skin and the gameplay itself would just be basic modern FPS combat. It’s basically a team-based first-person shooter set in a loony toons inspired World War II. World War Toons was probably not an extremely popular notice when revealed at PSX 2015, but I was interested.
